McGill University Partnership Agreement

McGill University Animal Health students can now more easily pursue a DVM with St. Matthew’s University.

Partnership with McGill University Benefits Future Veterinarians

St. Matthew’s University School of Veterinary Medicine (SMUSVM) and McGill University (McGill) are happy to share an impactful new partnership agreement, which will support aspiring Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students as they plan for veterinary school at SMUSVM on Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.

Under this agreement, McGill students taking the BSc (Ag.Env.Sc.) Life Sciences (Biological and Agricultural) Major, with an Animal Health and Disease Specialization, will benefit from an enhanced pathway to the DVM program at SMUSVM. This will include an expedited application review process, a guaranteed interview and eligibility for a $15,000 USD Partnership Scholarship. These pathway students are also eligible for other grants and scholarships to help make our veterinary education more accessible, such as the U.S. and Canadian Academic Scholarship and Opportunity Grant.

In order to secure eligibility for these partnership benefits, qualifying applicants are required to complete the minimum prerequisite courses at McGill. Once accepted and ready to begin, student have the flexibility to enter the DVM program in January, May or September, whichever works best for them.

“We are so excited for this new partnership and the opportunities it will create for these Canadian students who dream of careers as practicing veterinarians,” said Samantha Shields, DVM, MVetSci (Conservation Med), who is Dean of SMUSVM and from Ontario. “The world needs more veterinarians and we are proud to contribute to this by training and educating future practitioners and leaders in animal health care.”

“McGill University’s Department of Animal Science is excited to offer this opportunity to students to pursue their dream of becoming vets. At McGill, students will obtain valuable preparation for Vet Studies, and St. Matthews offers them a great scholarship, too!” shared Julie Major, agr., Ph.D., Senior Faculty Lecturer.

McGill University Animal Health and Disease Specialization students who attend SMUSVM will benefit from hands-on training that starts in their first semester and unique access to small animals and aquatic reptilian care, an opportunity unique to the Caribbean. Students will of course receive training for and access to large animals as well. They will experience a strong veterinary medicine curriculum, instruction from knowledgeable faculty and personalized attention in intentionally small cohorts. Hundreds of former SMUSVM students have benefited from this supportive educational environment and gone on to develop meaningful careers as practicing veterinarians in the U.S. and Canada.
